California's First Citizens Redistricting Commission

Proposition 11 (The Voters FIRST Act) was passed by the voters in November 2008. It authorized the creation of a Citizens Redistricting Commission to draw the lines for district boundaries for the state Assembly, Senate and Board of Equalization.

The Applicant Review Panel (ARP) is processing the current pool of applicants to be interviewed as part of the selection process for the 14-member commission. The commission will be seated by January 2011 to begin the work of drawing district lines after the 2010 census.

Learn more about the selection process, time-lines and implementation at CAvotes.org.

Meet Charolette Fox

Meet Lottie, member-at-large and Natural Resources Director on the board of the state League. Like so many long-time League members, Lottie joined when her children were in school, finding the League a place to be involved in her local community in ways that led both to self-fulfillment and to civic improvement. Read her inspring story and join us.

Fight the Scheme to Gut Redistricting Reform

Redistricting Reform is under attack. Proposition 27, an initiative to gut voter-approved Prop 11of 2008 and eliminate the Citizens Redistricting Commission, will be on your November ballot. The League is fighting to protect the voters’ right to choose their elected representatives and stop neighborhoods and communities from being torn apart to guarantee incumbents’ reelection. Find out more about this outrageous scheme and learn what you can do.

The League Recommends

We oppose Propositions 20, 23, 26 and strongly oppose Proposition 27. We support Propositions 24 and 25. Read more online and spread the word using our two-page flyer about our recommendations for the November 2, 2010 Statewide General Election.

Learn more about our current priorities and the process we used to set them, including some of the criteria used.

Court Order Invalidating Proposition 8 Stayed

The League opposed Proposition 8 and filed an amicus brief challenging the measure after it passed. Read more about our position on marriage equality and the current status of Proposition 8 here.

Who Will Lead Us?

Our board's next two-year term begins in July, 2011. Directors will be elected at the LWVC Convention in May, 2011. Local Leagues, ILOs or individual League members may nominate candidates. It is also perfectly acceptable for a member to nominate her/himself. This is a fabulous opportunity to make a difference!
