LWVC Nonpartisan Analysis of Proposition 208
WHY THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF CALIFORNIA RECOMMENDS YES ON
PROPOSITION 208
The LWVC position on Campaign Financing supports full public disclosure of campaign
contributions and expenditures, effective monitoring and enforcement, measures which will
broaden the base of campaign financing, realistic limits on contributions to campaigns, and
realistic limits on the amount each candidate can spend.
Proposition 208 is the only real campaign reform on the ballot. Proposition 208:
- is a practical and fair common sense solution to get big special interest money out of our political process.
- is sponsored by LWVC, Common Cause, AARP, UWSA and backed by an exceptionally broad coalition. Endorsers range from the American Lung Association to Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association to the Planning and Conservation League.
- is carefully written to meet the Constitutionality test so that it will not merely "send a
message" but will go into effect immediately and fix the problem of rampant special
interest influence.
Proposition 208 will give California the toughest campaign finance law in the nation, and it
will pass muster in the courts.
California needs Proposition 208 right now because our legislators are creating laws to serve
the narrow special interests of their big money donors rather than laws which address the
needs of the majority of their constituents. What's good for the tobacco and insurance
industries is not necessarily good for you and me.
The financing of campaigns has a direct effect on the decisions that elected officials make on the
issues that affect your daily life the cost of car insurance, access to affordable health care, the
quality of education, etc.
