"Making Democracy Work" Awards To Be Presented at League of Women Voters of California 60th Convention in Oakland, May 15-18, 2003 Statewide Leaders Convene to Discuss New Challenges, New Solutions and Continue the League's Respected Work in Promoting Active Participation by Citizens in Their Government (Oakland, CA, May 6, 2003)---"Making Democracy Work" awards are an innovation at this year's League of Women Voters Convention, to be held at the Marriott Hotel in Oakland May 15-18. The first presentation of these new awards for outstanding leadership by individuals, organizations, and businesses who have engaged in activities that epitomize some aspect of the purpose and mission of the League of Women Voters, will be at the Convention banquet the night of Saturday, May 17, and along with the keynote address by Congresswoman Barbara Lee will be the highlight of that event. The "Making Democracy Work" awards will be presented as follows: to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, for outstanding leadership by a Californian at the national level; to Assemblywoman Wilma Chan, Majority Leader of the California State Assembly, for outstanding leadership at the state level; and to the California Legislative Analyst's Office, Elizabeth Hill, Director, for outstanding effectiveness, consistency, and integrity of performance by a governmental body. Others receiving "Making Democracy Work" awards will be the Sierra Club, Verizon Wireless, and Kenneth Cole Productions for outstanding inspirational, effective, and non-partisan political advertisements circulated in California and designed to urge citizens to vote in the November 2002 election.
