Two Great Education Events!Women In Action Lobby DayWomen's Access to Education will be the topic of Women In Action Lobby Day, scheduled for Wednesday, April 28, 1999 at the Sacramento Convention Center from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The keynote speaker is Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin. This will be a full day with speakers and lunch followed by an opportunity to lobby your legislator. Education is at the top of everyone's priority list this year. A special session of the Legislature, running concurrently with the regular session, means that bills passed in that session go into effect immediately. This is a critical time to make sure that issues of particular interest to women are not overlooked. The cost this year has been reduced to $35 ($45 late registration), with a student discount price of $15. We hope that some Leagues or members will take advantage of this price to bring a young guest. Most of the discussion will pertain to all students, so please make an effort to contact any young people you know who might wish to attend. This is an excellent opportunity to pass along the League knowledge of politics and government to our next generation. They need our guidance, and we need their energy and enthusiasm. Women In Action Lobby Day forms are available from your local League or from the State Office. Anne Henderson, LWVC Legislative Director EdSource ConferenceDid you know that the League, along with California PTA and AAUW, started EdSource over twenty years ago? EdSource began as a way to explain changes in educational funding to citizens following the Serrano/Priest decision and passage of Proposition 13. It has become an organization known for its fair and impartial analysis of the many issues facing the public schools of California. Two state League board members still sit on the EdSource Board of Directors. With the new governor's focus on education, it is more important than ever to be aware of the concerns and problems that must be addressed in our schools. Student Achievement: What Influences It and What We Can Do To Improve It! is the provocative title of EdSource's annual conference this year. It is being held March 25 in Irvine and March 26 in San Ramon with the same content both north and south. Presenters will discuss what parents can do outside of school, factors which contribute to underachievement among disadvantaged students and how schools can respond to these realities, the responsibility of higher education for teacher preparation, and the priorities being set through statewide policies. Registration forms are available through your local League. Gail Dryden, LWVC Special Projects Director
