Join Us for CONVENTION in San Jose!

Karyn Gill, President, with Convention CoChairs Betty Mann (l) and Sandy Remmers (r)

Every two years, California LWV members meet in convention to conduct necessary business, lobby for changes, attend workshops, mingle, and purchase League publications and gifts. Convention `99 will take place May 14-16 in San Jose at the DoubleTree Hotel, 2050 Gateway Place.

Local Leagues select voting delegates to attend Convention, but all League members are welcome to attend (but not vote) and participate in Convention activities on one or more days.

Those who have attended previous conventions will tell you that it's a rewarding and exciting experience. Besides being forums for important decision making, these meetings provide an opportunity for members to experience the diversity and unity of League as they meet, talk and exchange ideas with members from other areas of the state.

Delegates will:

  • decide if there will be new studies and which of our Positions will be Issues for Emphasis for the next two years,
  • elect officers and directors to lead the organization for two years,
  • determine the amount that local Leagues will pay to support the state LWV operation
  • adopt a budget
  • revise the bylaws

Sending delegates from your League to convention is a valuable investment in the future -- the investment of continuing the League's mission to educate and advocate.

Visitors (non-delegates) may register and attend the Plenary (business) sessions, workshops, briefings, caucuses and the banquet. Four California League leaders will be talking about the future of the League at the Friday morning session: Jean Askham with 50/50 by 2020; Sheila Hoff on Reproductive Choice; Xandra Kayden about the L.A. City Charter; and Kathleen Weisenberg with Smart Voter. The newly elected president of LWVUS, Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins, will speak Sunday morning.

If you are interested in attending Convention as a delegate from your League, speak to your president. Visitors may use the form provided on the Convention '99 Website or register at the hotel during Convention.

Contact the DoubleTree (408-453-4000) to make a hotel reservation. The League rate is $95, guaranteed only through April 16.

No other experience offers such a rich opportunity to share and grow and take pride in the League. With your help and the help of those you influence, we can continue to be the advocate for the voter.

The Convention Committee: Sandy Remmers (LWV San Jose/Santa Clara) and Betty Mann (LWV Cupertino/Sunnyvale) co-chairs
