MTAs Share Experience

Pat Wadleigh

The Los Altos/Mountain View League hosted a statewide meeting of MTAs (Management Training Assistants) on October 24-25, 1998.

On Saturday morning the meeting shared experiences, problems, and successes in achieving diversity. The group felt that the primary purpose of a diversity policy is not to gain members, but to serve the community.

The afternoon session worked on experiences and problems that each MTA had encountered. The group felt that a new president's workshop at both LWVC Council and Convention was needed. Orientations should emphasize how League process works.

Other discussions included strategies for organizing a workable League when there is no president, and how to prioritize membership by having membership committees. The group reaffirmed that they wished MTAs to be known as resources for local Leagues.

Sunday's session was a Project Open Door computer training session with Deborah Hunt as facilitator. MTAs now understand what the training includes and can help local Leagues arrange for training for their members.

WANTED: A Few Good Management Training Assistants (MTAs)

MTAs work with an assigned group of five or six local Leagues to provide support and a resource for organizational change. Typical MTA activities include board training and orientation, answering questions from members, reminding boards about LWVC opportunities and deadlines, reading agendas, minutes and Voters (and keeping them on file), and advising on bylaws changes. MTAs stay in touch with the Management Training Vice Presidents in their area and receive resource materials and training from LWVC.
