How to Keep A Good Thing Going![]() By Ramona Salisbury, Natural Resources Director LWV State Board 1997 - 1999 As a senior citizen, I'm a firm believer that the benefits of giving are more enjoyable if the commitments are made while you are living. That is why I have made a bequest to the League at both the local and state level as part of my trust document. When I was 29 years old and raising three little boys under seven years old, I yearned for intelligent adult conversation. I, also, wanted to learn about the new city where my husband's job had transported us. The League of Women Voters of Des Moines provided the stimulation I needed and I soon accepted the position of Membership Chair. Later, transfers to Minneapolis and Omaha provided new friends and interesting issues to explore. I found that serving as President and on the Nebraska State LWV Board qualified me for a position in the Mayor's cabinet. Later because of my interest in affordable housing, I was promoted to planning director at the Housing Authority. Since I credit the League with the organizational and leadership skills that I have acquired, I am indebted to this wonderful organization. What better way to show that appreciation than to provide a bequest? My bequest is split between my local League and LWVC, because after serving on the California State Board during the past two years I have a new understanding of how important our work is at the state level. For immediate gratification, share your current stock market success by giving some appreciated shares of a security this year. Leagues are experiencing a growing need for paid staff as our younger members with full time careers assume positions of leadership. This is an area of underwriting in which we, as long time members, can help. At the same time you will avoid the capital gains tax and receive a significant charitable tax deduction. Consult your attorney or tax advisor and experience the good feeling you will receive because you know that this organization, which has had such a positive influence, will continue.
