Great Minds Think Alike: PTA and LWV Come Together

By Emily Penfield, LWVC Voters Services Director, South

On Wednesday, May 6, 1998, the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund and the California State PTA are planning to co-sponsor a forum for candidates for the gubernatorial primary. The forum will be held in San Diego at Golden Hall, San Diego Concourse, 202 C Street, between 10 a.m. and 12 noon during the PTA's 99th Annual State Convention. The forum will be moderated by LWVCEF President, Karyn Gill. All candidates for the office of Governor who meet criteria established and approved by the California State PTA and LWVCEF will be invited to participate. Heading up the project are Carol West, North Coast San Diego County League, Thea Brodkin, Los Angeles City League, and Ann Desmond and Brenda Davis of the PTA. Between 3000 and 4000 members of the California PTA are expected to attend and the forum will be carried by commercial television and radio. West, Forum Chair says, "This is a marvelous opportunity for the public to get a look at the candidates' answers to tough questions from active parents who are not going to accept sound-bite answers. They expect thoughtful answers to their thoughtful questions. And from a League perspective, that's the way the process should work."

A limited number of seats will be available for local Leagues. An UPDATE was issued detailing how tickets would be distributed. Contact your local League President if you are interested in attending. For more information, please call the State Office at 1-888-870-VOTE.
